Visionaries and Planners: The Garden City Movement and the Modern Community

Visionaries and Planners: The Garden City Movement and the Modern Community
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA | ISBN: 0195061748 | edition 1990 | PDF | 288 pages | 18,7 mb

For nearly a century the Garden City movement has represented one end of a continuum in an ongoing debate about the future of the modern city. In 1898 Ebenezer Howard envisioned an experimental community as the alternative to huge, teeming cities. Small, planned "garden cities" girdled by greenbelts were to serve in time as the "master key" to a higher, more cooperative stage of civilization based on ecologically balanced communities. Howard soon founded an international planning movement which ever since has represented a remarkable blend of accommodation to and protest against urban changes and the rise of the suburbs. In this interconnected history of the Garden City movement in the United States and Britain, Buder examines its influence, strengths and limitations. Howard's garden city, he shows, joined together two very different types of late-nineteenth-century experimental communities, creating a tension never fully resolved. One approach, utopian and radical in nature, challenged conventional values; the other, the model industrial towns of "enlightened" capitalists, reinforceed them. Buder traces this tension through planning history from the nineteenth-century world of visionaries, philanthropy, and self help into our own with its reliance on the expert, bureaucracy, and governmental policy, shedding light on the complex changes in the way we have thought in the twentieth century about community, urban design, and indeed the process of change. His final chapters examine the world-wide enthusiasm for "New Towns" between 1945-1975 and recent political and social trends which challenge many fundamental assumptions of modern planning.

Closeups in Nature

clip_image001

John Shaw's, Closeups in Nature
Amphoto Books (September 1987) | ISBN: 0817440526 | PDF | 143 Pages | 67 Mb

There's more than one way to shoot a frog, as Shaw demonstrates in this splendid book, a thorough course in practical field techniques for closeup photography using a 35mm single-lens reflex camera. Although hobbyists who want to capture the flowers in their garden can glean ideas for composition or the best time of day to photograph, this detailed work is intended primarily for the serious amateur or professional. Success in closeup photography, Shaw maintains, depends on control, and he advocates meticulous experiment-ing and testing of equipment and supplies before one attempts to photograph in the quickly changing, unpredictable conditions of the field. Shaw (The Nature Photographer's Complete Guide to Professional Field Techniques) is an excellent teacher, establishing a common vocabulary with the reader, presenting lavishly illustrated new material that builds on previous knowledge, repeating important concepts and techniques for emphasis. He believes that technical competence frees the photographer to concentrate on esthetics, and his inspiring pictures are beautiful artworkfields of flowers that evoke impressionist paintings, delicate dogwood blossoms reminiscent of Oriental designs, rare glimpses of snowflakes or raindrops on a yew needle. Photography Book Club main selection.

Joan Benjamin "Great Garden Formulas: The Ultimate Book of Mix-It-Yourself Concoctions for Gardeners"
Published by Rodale Books | July 1998 | ISBN : 0875967981 | PDF Format, 159 pages | English | 26 MB

Most gardeners know that compost is good for their soil and have heard, at least vaguely, that a mixture containing baking soda is good for roses. But who knew that you could make fertilizer from soaking weeds in water? The editors have collected ideas from organic gardeners all over the country that will help even experienced gardeners improve their soil, fertilize their plants, reduce weeds and pests, and even concoct a soothing hand cream to use when the work is done.
Grouped thematically by chapter, these formulas employ either natural ingredients or simple chemicals such as Epsom salts, and most are easy to make and use. The word formula is used in its broadest sense, as there are suggestions for attracting butterflies and for making a wildflower meadow as well as creating fertilizer from Swiss chard or herbal candles. A source list for products and services ends the book. This will be a great source for crafters as well as for creative garden experimenters.
Whether you're looking for a quick-cooking compost recipe or a safe spray to stop garden-eating pests, you'll find all-new mixtures that really work to solve your garden problems in Great Garden Formulas!

Encyclopedia of Water Garden Plants

clip_image001

Encyclopedia of Water Garden Plants [ILLUSTRATED]
Timber Press, Incorporated | ISBN: 0881926256 | 2004-01 April | PDF | 387 pages | 158 Mb

Waterlilies, lotus, submerged, floating and marginal water plants all get their due in this lavishly illustrated encyclopedia by Water Gardening Magazine founders Greg and Sue Speichert. Each category of plant is discussed in its own chapter, with information about its proper soil, planting and climate requirements. Much of the book is given over to descriptions of various species, and home gardeners should especially appreciate the book’s useful appendixes, which list plants for special places, such as table-top ponds, as well as by their colors. 707 color photos.
Most books on water gardening devote too little space to plants, and yet, the plants one chooses will be critical to the success or failure of any given situation. The Speicherts have spent years working on this comprehensive resource, offering gardeners beautifully written entries that take in all the characteristics and cultivation requirements of hundreds of plants. A vast range of plant possibilities is included, from marginal species and floating plants to many that grow with submerged roots or in bogs. So, whether a gardener is dealing with a large pond in the countryside, a boggy backyard area, or a solitary barrel converted to a water garden, this lushly illustrated compilation filled with color photographs should provide the details and guidance necessary to select appropriate specimens for any type of acquatic design. Countless cultivars are described as the authors propose the best, most attractive flora to enhance the prospect of a water garden environment.
